Canada will hold snap polls soon, says opposition leader

OTTAWA - Canadian Liberal opposition leader Stephane Dion said on Monday after meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper that the government will call snap elections soon.

"I am convinced that he wants to have an election," Dion said after the meeting at the prime minister's residence.

Asked by reporters if an election would take place in the coming days, Dion said: "Yes, yes there will be an election. We all know it."

A Harper spokesman said the prime minister will make a decision in the next two or three days.

Harper, who has headed a minority government since 2006, has insisted in the past several weeks that elections were inevitable to break a deadlock with the opposition on several issues.

In a bid to find common ground, Harper met since Friday with the leaders of the three opposition parties, including Dion, who leads the biggest faction.
